Grassland Birds in Groningen
Godwits have been under immense pressure for years. Since 1970, the global population of the godwit has declined by 75%. The number of chicks that fledge is not enough to replace the older birds, and this is also true in the province of Groningen.
Het Groninger Landschap is committed to the protection of godwits and other grassland birds in Groningen. How do they do this?
- Advocating for the protection of grassland bird areas in politics. A great example is the petition Give the Godwit a Future in Polder De Oude Held, in collaboration with other nature organizations.
- Collaborating closely with farmer collectives and tenants who focus on nature-inclusive farming and preserving grassland birds on farmland.
- Expanding grassland bird areas by acquiring new plots of land.
- Contributing to research through monitoring godwits and their breeding success.
- Optimizing grassland bird areas by ensuring enough food, safety, and tranquility.

Grutto Design donated 1% of its total annual revenue in 2022 to Het Groninger Landschap. In addition, Grutto Design donates all profits from the sale of this special Groninger sock. The donations from Grutto Design fully benefit the protection of godwits in Groningen. Thanks to Grutto Design, Het Groninger Landschap can further optimize the Reitdiep grassland bird area and improve the food supply for both young and adult godwits. This is done by rewetting grassland bird plots with a water pump powered by solar panels.
